NUJ(I) appeals PM for curbing attacks on mediapersons08 Dec, 2016
In order to draw the attention of the Government of India on growing attacks on mediapersons all over the country during the last one decade and pressing upon its demand for enactment of a Journalists Protection Act, the National Union of Journalists (India) today submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at Prime Minister Office. Apart from demanding the enactment of the Journalists Protection Act, the NUJ(I) also demanded time bound resolution of various problems faced by the journalists of both the print and electronic media and problems of Small & Medium Newspapers.
The delegation lead by Mr Ras Bihari, President NUJ(I) including Shri Manoj Verma, Secretary, NUJ(I), Mr Pramod Majumdar, National Executive Member, Mr Manoj Misra, National Executive Member, Mr Netrapal Sharma and Mr Sachin Budhauliya Senior Member, DJA.
In a statement NUJ(I) president Mr Ras Bihari said the Journalists Protection Act should be enacted immediately as the attacks on journalists are growing and they feel extremely unsafe in several states. He said the demands for constitution of Media Council and Media Commission have also been raised strongly in the memorandum. He pointed out that over 200 incidents of attacks on journalists have been reported from different states during the year. Referring to the recent attacks on journalists in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and some other states, he said the perpetrators of the crime are still away from the bars.
NUJ(I) Secretary General Mr Ratan Dixit said the state units of NUJ(I) have already submitted memorandums to Chief Ministers, Governors and Prime Minister through the authorities concerned in 22 state capitals and also at over 150 district headquarters. The memorandum demanded enactment of the Journalist Protection Act, creation of Media Council and constitution of Media Commission and immediate curb on the retrenchment of journalists in media houses.
