NUJ(I) hails Haryana Govt for incentives to journalists

The National Union of Journalists (India) hailed the Haryana Government’s decision to provide Rs 10,000 monthly pension for the journalists who are above 60 years and have completed 20 years in the profession. The Haryana Government has also announced a life insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh and a cashless mediclaim policy of Rs 500,000. The announcements were made by Chief Minister Shri Manohar Lal in Panchkula on May 27, 2017. The CM also announced that the journalists, who have completed five years in the profession, would be given recognition by the state government. He also announced that a new policy would be framed for giving recognition to representatives of online news portals.

Welcoming the steps taken by the state government, NUJ(I) national President Ras Bihari hoped that the other state governments would also provide similar benefits to the working journalists in their respective states. He urged the Central Government also to take immediate steps ensuring these benefits to all the journalists of the country.

In a statement Ras Bihari pointed out that a delegation of the NUJ(I) had called on the Chief Minister Shri Manohar Lal on April 12, 2017 and submitted a memorandum containing various genuine demands for the scribes. “The NUJ(I) welcomes the decision of the state government and believe that rest of the demands will also be met by the government soon,” said NUJ(I) Secretary General Ratan Dixit in the statement. The other major demands raised by the NUJ(I) before the Chief Minister on April 12 included enactment of Journalists Protection Act, Housing Scheme for scribes and space at district headquarters with state of the art facilities for journalists to file their stories.

NUJ(I) Delhi unit, Delhi Journalists Association (DJA), also lauded the decision of the Haryana Government and demanded the Government of Delhi to take similar steps for the journalists working in Delhi. “The journalists in Delhi have been demanding all the facilities provided by the Haryana Government. We urge Delhi Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal to ensure the facility of monthly pension and life insurance cover to all journalists working in Delhi,” said DJA president Manohar Singh and General Secretary Pramod Kumar in a joint statement.
