Press Statement
Sri Lanka: Press Release
02 Nov, 2020There is an upsurge of instances of violent crimes against journalists all over the world during the past several years.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has named 2020 as the year to end impunity for crimes against journalists and has organized an international protest campaign to coincide with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
The IFJ’s specific emphasis has been placed on five countries where impunity rates for such crimes seriously threaten media freedom: Yemen, India, Russia, Mexico and Somalia. The international campaign is scheduled to be held under the theme ‘End Impunity 2020: Journalists’ killings – masterminds are walking free’.
Federation of Media Employees’ Trade Unions (FMETU) too stands firm in solidarity with the international campaign on this day in memory of our murdered comrades including Lasantha Wickramatunge, Dharmaratnam Sivaram and hundreds of others who had been killed, attacked, and incarcerated while the successive governments in Sri Lanka have failed to seek redress for crimes against media workers.
