Press Statement

After death threat, Pakistani journalist survives murder attempt

12 Jun, 2017

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) expresses serious concern over the attempted murder of journalist Rana Tanveer in Lahore, Pakistan on Friday, June 9. The IFJ demands immediate arrest of the culprits and security for the journalist.

Journalist Tanveer, who had reportedly received death threats for writing about religious minorities for Express Tribune newspaper, was run over by a car. Tanveer survived the murder attempt with an injured left leg. He is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Tanveer had moved to a safe house after his residence door was painted with a death threat a few days earlier. He had reported the matter but the police did not register a First Information Report.

The IFJ notes that despite demands to provide him safety and investigate the death threats against him, Pakistani authorities did not do enough to provide security, thus leading to an attempt on his life.

The IFJ said: “The IFJ condemns the attempt to kill journalist Rana Tanveer in Pakistan, and expresses serious concern that despite the issue of death threats being raised by the IFJ and other organizations, the Pakistani authorities failed to provide him security. The IFJ urges the Pakistani authorities to immediately arrest those involved and ensure the safety of journalist Tanveer.”
