India: IJU Demands immediate release of the editor of the news website The Kashmiriyat Qazi Shibli
04 Aug, 2020Indian Journalists Union (IJU) demanded that the editor of the news website The Kashmiriyat Qazi Shibli immediately be released from custody. Shibli was detained at the Shergarh police station in Srinagar on July 31 after questioning by the police’s cybercrime division, according to local sources. He was earlier arrested on July 25, 2019 under India’s Public Safety Act and held in prison for nine months without trial. He was released after pressure mounted from national and international journalist’s organizations. IJU President and former member of Press Council of India Geetartha Pathak and Secretary General of IJU, also Vice President of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Sabina Inderjit said in a statement that the authorities must allow independent journalists to do their work. IJU leaders said that such wanton inference on media rights will make the largest democracy in the world a mockery.
