India: NUJ(I)’s note on assault of media persons
25 Mar, 2020The NUJ(India) is very much concerned about the raising incidents of atrocities on journalists across the country while they were covering Covid-19 amid All India lockdown. NUJ(I) strongly criticize these assaults by Police and demands from the central and state governments for the safety of journalists while discharging their professional duties.
NUJ(I) President-elect Ras Bihari and Secretary General-elect Prasanna Mohanty said that NUJ(I) is worried with increasing incidents of assaults in the state. They express concern over the safety of reporters. The NUJ(I) calls on the enactment of the Journalists Protection Act. It also demands the Central Government and State government to instruct authorities concerned not to repeat such the incidents in future. NUJ(I) is sure that unless journalists are free to report the truth, the entire edifice of democracy may collapse. Hence it is the prime responsibility of the Indian state to ensure the environment that enables working journalists to pursue their professional work freely and fearlessly.
