Missing Journalist found dead in Jharkhand; family claims murder

A senior journalist, Hari Prakash, was found dead in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district. The family members of the journalist claimed that he has been murdered. He was missing for the last two days. The police recovered a bottle of poison from the journalist, and his body has been sent for the post-mortem examination. Hari Prakash was working as a correspondent for a the Hindi newspaper, Dainik Jagran.

Describing the the murder as “suspicious”, NUJ(I) President Ras Bihari said Hari Prakash’s murder is in doubt. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to Prakash’s family, and demand the authorities to bring those responsible for the murder to justice, and break the cycle of violence and impunity that has plagued in the state for so long. We also demand the police and judiciary to ensure that the culprits do not go unpunished. The NUJ(India) will soon send a fact finding committee comprising senior journalists to investigate the facts into the murder,” Ratan Dixit, Secretary General of NUJ(I) added.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Hari Prakash,” said Sheo Kumar Agarwal, General Secretary of Jharkhand Union of Journalists (JUJ).

“Too many journalists in Jharkhand are being attacked with impunity. We demand immediate investigation into the murder and justice to the family. We call upon all the national and international media bodies to condemn the heinous act and this brutal form of silencing should end,” Rajat Gupta, President, JUJ added.
