NUJ(I) Condemns Journalists beaten in West Bengal
05 Sep, 2019New Delhi September 3, 2017 :- The National Union of Journalists (India) strongly condemned the incident took place in Barrackpore, West Bengal. According to the information, West Bengal Police Deputy Commissioner was caught on camera openly assaulting journalists who were covering the violence in Barrackpore. Local reporters were present at the venue when a police team led by DC Barrackpore, Ajay Thakur, was trying to enter MP Arjun Singh’s residence “Majdoor Bhawan” in Bhatpara. In the tense situation, the officer was seen hitting a TV journalist on the face. Later, several other journalists claimed that Thakur had assaulted others as well.
NUJ(I) President Prajnananda Chauduri and Secretary General Sheo Kumar Agarwal said that NUJ(I) will send a Fact Finding Committee and appeal to the state government to setup a high level judicial committee to probe the incident and punish the guilty police officers for assaulting journalists. The NUJ(I)’s demand for the enactment of the Journalists Protection Act is endorsing this incident. NUJ(I) strongly criticize these barbaric acts and demand the State governments to nab the culprits at the earliest. We also demand to look into the security of the media persons, while covering different events in the states.”
WBUJ President Prabir Chatterjee informed to NUJ(I) that merciless atrocity instructed by the senior police officers of West Bengal police he also demanded adequate compensation to the injured journos and appeal to the state government and administration to give advisory to all authorities that this incidents could not occurs in future.
