Press Statement

Radio station vandalized in Nepal

01 Feb, 2016

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) in condemning an attack on a radio station in southern Nepal on January 29. The IFJ and FNJ call for an immediate investigation into the attack.

A gang of 15 unidentified people entered the office of Radio Madhesh 89.3 Mhz and the Madesh Post weekly in Sarlahi district at 6 pm on Friday and vandalized the office and threatened staff, according to reports. The attack left the office’s doors and windows damanged, with Radio Madhesh 89.3 Mhz stopping its broadcast after the attack, citing security concerns.

The FNJ, in a statement, said: “The FNJ believe that the incident is an attack on press freedom. We demand immediate action against the culprits and security for the radio station.”

The IFJ said: “We condemn the attack on the radio station. Such attacks instil fear with media workers and journalists with a chilling effect on press freedom. The IFJ demands urgent action from Nepal Government to punish he culprits and ensure the safety of the media and journalists.”
